History of the Islands

The Hawaiian Islands evolved through underwater volcanic action over thousands of years. As the islands grew from the ocean, they developed a unique ecosystem. Everything from the tiniest insects, to plants, and the native wildlife in rain forest evolved in complete isolation. No one knows for sure exactly when, but the islands of Hawaii were first settled by Polynesian migrants several hundred years before Columbus discovered America. It is speculated that the first settlers of Hawaii came from the Marquesas Islands around 500 A.D. These original Hawaiians lived a communal lifestyle. The believed their lives were controlled by supernatural gods of the earth, sea and sky. They spent their days fishing, hunting, farming and gathering. Hawaii became the 50th U.S. state on August 21, 1959.

Native Arts and Culture

Hawaiian language, music and dance date back for thousands of years or more. The islands are home to the most diverse groups of people in the world. This diversity and history is celebrated for twelve weeks every year by visitors and residents alike. During the celebration, the days and nights are packed with cultural events and art adventures across all the islands. Even during the weeks they are not celebrating, there are many ways to connect with both contemporary and historical cultural and art activities throughout each island.

Another large cultural event is the Hawaii Arts Season. During this time, visitors can become active participants to learn about Hawaii’s unique culture. Visitors can learn to play a nose flute or weave a fan made of lauhala leaves. The Arts Season also is the ideal time to see the best hula dancers perform in a heated competition.
